A comprehensive package of aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling by CMS Window Systems has helped to create a world-class learning campus in the North Ayrshire town of Largs.
The new £44m, 2,000-student Largs Campus developed by North Ayrshire Council in conjunction with infrastructure partnership hub South West is North Ayrshire Council’s largest ever investment in a single project. Designed by JM Architects, the state-of-the-art learning facility replaces two primary schools – Largs Primary and St Mary’s – as well as accommodating Early Years nurseries and the town’s relocated secondary school, Largs Academy.
Delivered by Morrison Construction via a design, build, finance and maintain contract, Largs Campus is equipped with the widest range of facilities including two theatres, a gym hall believed to be the largest in the UK and art classrooms with balconies that enable outdoor working with views along the Ayrshire Coastline. Externally, students benefit from a synthetic 7-a-side pitch and a multi-use games area.
CMS Window Systems was tasked with manufacturing and installing an extensive mix of aluminium windows, doors and curtain walling in a contract valued at £1.3m. This was manufactured to the architect’s specification using a variety of Metal Technology systems which ensure the fenestration delivers multiple aesthetic, thermal performance, comfort, safety and security benefits over a long, low maintenance service life.
The windows utilise Metal Technology’s System 4-35 Hi+ to provide top hung vents and fixed lights, with the doors created using its thermal 5-20D Hi+ system. Curtain walling features throughout the campus too, which was created by CMS Window Systems using Metal Technology’s System 17.
The majority of the glazing specification was for 28mm double insulating units, featuring a 6mm Securit Planitherm Ultra N II low-e glass on the outer skin, and a 6mm SGG Securit safety glass on the inner skin. The 16mm cavity features a warm edge spacer bar in black, with an argon gas filled.
In areas of the building where there was a need for greater solar control, the glazing featured a 6mm Cool‐lite SKN 174 II outer pane. Additional security objectives in ground floor/vulnerable areas were also met by the use of a 6.8mm SGG Stadip laminate safety glass inner pane.
Speaking ahead of the opening of the facility, Councillor John Bell, Cabinet Member for Education and Youth Employment, said: “These are incredibly exciting times for young people, families, staff and everyone at North Ayrshire Council. The facilities at the Largs Campus are going to be the best in Scotland. We will have the best sport facilities in Scotland, if not the UK. We have invested heavily in the nursery and have ultra-modern facilities that incorporate parent rooms, family rooms and imaginative play and learning areas for our young people.”
Stephen Anderson, Aluminium Contracts Director at CMS Window Systems added: “We are delighted to have worked with North Ayrshire Council and Morrison Construction on this fantastic educational project, which I’m sure will benefit many generations of young people. Our team has once again demonstrated its ability to deliver the highest quality result through our market-leading technical expertise at all stages through design, manufacture and installation.”
