Windows and doors fit for the future

PVCu double glazing first hit the UK market in a big way in the 1970s and revolutionised the way homeowners could think about the comfort and energy efficiency of their homes. Although they were transformational at the time, the performance of those early profiles and glass units was not a patch on what’s possible today.

Fast forward forty years and the performance capabilities of today’s PVCu windows and doors manufactured by CMS Trade ensure that homeowners will have lasting benefits for years to come. With very low U-values achieved by the use of Eurocell and REHAU multi-chamber profiles, in combination with low-e glass units manufactured in the UK, our windows and doors are designed and built to keep as much warmth as possible inside during the winter, without allowing rooms to get too warm in the summer. With more extremes of hot and cold predicted as a result of climate change, these capabilities are more important than ever.

Here are five important reasons why the CMS Trade window and door range is fit for the future:

Multi-chamber PVCu profiles

The market-leading Eurocell and REHAU profile systems which are used to manufacture all our PVCu windows and doors are designed to combine strength and durability with the minimisation of heat transfer from inside to out. With a 70mm front-to-back dimension, the profiles are a seamless replacement for timber frames in style, but with 21st century performance that requires virtually no maintenance over a lifespan of 35+ years when installed correctly.

Low-e double glazed units or triple glazing

Low emissivity (low-e) glass has transformed the level of thermal insulation possible in a sealed unit. All the double and triple glazed units that go into CMS Trade windows and doors utilise this advanced glass technology, and they are manufactured by GLASSOLUTIONS Saint-Gobain at nearby Bellshill. This helps us support a local supply chain but also ensures we fit only the highest quality sealed units in our products, with additional options available to provide solar control and acoustic insulation. For a ‘zero carbon’ upgrade, we also manufacture PVCu windows and doors with triple glazing to a very low 0.8 W/m2K U-value – the Passivhaus standard.

Airtightness and weather performance

Many of the profile systems that we use feature post co-extruded (PCE) gaskets which use a specially developed compound and twin-leg profile connection system with one-way support arm. This provides excellent adhesion to the main profiles. Tested to BS6375, the gasket system achieves outstanding air tightness and weathering performance, improving energy efficiency further by minimising air leakage.

Manufactured using recycled materials

Recycling is part of everyday life and we are already ensuring that the products we are using contain a high level of recycled material, to avoid draining the Earth’s resources. The profile systems that we use contain up to 50% post-consumer waste and our sealed units over 35% - cutting the amount of new glass needed by over a third.

Recyclable at the end of their life

Choosing a CMS Trade PVCu window and door means homeowners are receiving products that are easy to recycle when they are eventually replaced. In fact, CMS has been at the forefront of recycling post-consumer windows and doors since 2006, an approach we pioneered in our industry, so it’s something we do every day. It’s good to know your new windows and doors are made using lots of recycled content and that they will be used to make something else in future.
